Is there help for debt consolidation? Sure, there is; and the help is available for free in some areas. If you are dealing with bad credit, then you can get help by reviewing the free do-it-yourself kits at the local libraries. People who are in debt can use their public library and find self help books that will direct them from start to finish through the process of paying your debts all the way to repairing your credit.

Most libraries will allow you to copy and print the forms inside the guides. This means you can just fill in the blanks, present the forms to the right sources; and soon you will be on your way to being free from debt.

If you are going to contact your creditor yourself, you have to understand that most of the credit companies would like to obtain a letter rather than a telephone call because you can go into so much more detail in the letter. Another reason you want to write letters is because if you ever get taken to court by this creditor you will have proof that you tried to get the debt settled on your own. It is always best to have {proof in writing} in  any situation, especially when if you have to go to court. Courts will always give weight to written proof over someone’s word every time.

You should also keep any reply letters that you receive from the lender. Keep good records of all your dealings with the company including talking to them on the phone. Recording your conversations may be a good idea including, the dates, time, and  who you talked with. Try to provide at least a simple outline of your conversation with the debt collector and store the records in an area that’s safe.

If you come across any errors or mistakes on your accounts that appear unexplained, don’t delay in taking it upon yourself to contact the creditors immediately. Also, if you have a charge card, and are forced to pay back debts on broken purchases, remember that it is illegal for anyone to force you to pay for damaged goods if you did not cause the damage.

Debt consolidation is an ongoing process, but if you find a way to relieve debt gradually, you will eventually harvest the benefits of your efforts when you become debt free.
